PHP  में प्रोग्रामिंग सुरु करने के लिए दो तरह के सॉफ्टवेयर की जरूरत पड़ती है  और जो सबसे अच्छी बात है वो ये की ये फ्री है
१- एडिटर - वैसे तो अब कई पेड एडिटर भी PHP के लिए आने लगे है पर अभी भी फ्री सॉफ्टवेयर बहुत अच्छा काम करता है और PHP शुरू करने के लिए अभी भी बेस्ट है । जो सॉफ्टवेयर मैं सबसे ज्यादा उसे करता हूँ वो है Notepad++।  notepad ++ को मैं अपने सभी वीडियो में प्रयोग करूँगा ।
२- वेब सर्वर - टेक्स्ट एडिटर की ही तरह अब वेब सर्वर भी पेड आता है पर अभी भी फ्री सर्वर बहुत ही अच्छा काम करता है जिनमे सबसे पॉपुलर दो सर्वर है
   a - WAMP
   b - XAMPP

इन सर्वर में से किसी भी सॉफ्टवेयर को लोकल कंप्यूटर पर इनस्टॉल करके उसे लोकल सर्वर बनाया जा सकता है और प्रोग्रामिंग की जा सकती है ।

PHP को कनाडा में रहने वाले Rasmus Lerdorf नाम के एक प्रोग्रामर ने विकसित किया था । Rasmus Lerdorf ने इसे होम पेज को मेंटेन करने के लिए  डेवेलप  किया था । बाद में इसे c प्रोग्रामिंग में लिखा जिससे HTML फॉर्म व डेटाबेस के साथ कम्युनिकेशन संभव हो पाया । PHP  से केवल वेबसाइट डेवलपमेंट किया जा सकता है ऐसा नहीं है इससे एडोब फ़्लैश और पीडीएफ फाइल्स को भी उसे कर सकते है । PHP के द्वारा HTML डाक्यूमेंट्स के साथ विभिन्न प्रकार के फॉर्मेट जैसे PDF, GIF, JPG, PMG, Flash Movies, Text Files, XML Files आदि के साथ प्रयोग करके अलग अलग तरह के एप्लीकेशन बन सकते है । PHP , MYSQL के साथ सबसे अच्छी तरह से काम करता है पर अन्य डेटाबेस के साथ भी जैसे PostgreSQL, Oracle, Sybase आदि के साथ भी काम करती है ।  PHP  एक स्क्रिप्टिंग लैंग्वेज है और सर्वर साइड स्क्रिप्टिंग लैंग्वेज है ।
